Teaching and Research Overview

I serve as Director of the University of Wisconsin Soil Testing, Plant Analysis and Feed and Forage Analysis Laboratories at Marshfield and Madison; and Extension Soil Scientist. My major responsibilities include: Directing the operation of the two laboratories operated by the UW-Madison Department of Soil Science and UW-Extension. Developing and refining new laboratory procedures and implementing new technology. Conducting educational programs for regional laboratory personnel and coordinating the Wisconsin soil testing laboratory certification program for participating laboratories. Supporting agricultural extension activities as a state extension specialist, including working with county-based extension staff, other agricultural professionals and directly with farmers. Preparing extension articles and making formal presentations in a wide variety of forums on topics related to soil fertility and plant nutrition, crop production, soil and water conservation, animal feed production and quality evaluation, land application of waste and by-product materials, and analytical laboratory management and methodology. Conducting research in Wisconsin, working with soil fertility and waste disposal issues, particularly as they relate to soil test calibration, liming, crop production, livestock feeding and nutrient management strategies.
