Rick Wayne

Rick is a software developer for the Soil Science Department at the University of Wisconsin, as well as free-lance writer (he was New & Noteworthy Editor for the award-winning magazine Software Development until its sad demise). His coworkers think that he's been sitting in front of his monitor a little too long.

If you have a finer anagram for his (full) name than "AN IRON-JAWED WRECK AND FIERY RUDE", he'd love to hear about it.

Bio

Rick graduated from Indiana University in 1981 with a double major in biology and journalism. In his very last semester there, he took an introductory programming course and was hooked, but his diploma had already been printed and they wouldn't let him change majors again.

He worked as an advertising copywriter for a scientific instrument company for a few years, slid sideways into computers there, took a few years of computer science at UW-Madison and has been hacking happily away ever since.

He's written system support code for Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy instrumentation, worked as a system administrator, written video device drivers for CAD software, and written communications administrative software for UW Extension. At Soils, he's writing Java, Ruby, C, XML/XSL, and RMI code for things like agricultural decision support and weather data publishing, managing some Mac OS X and Linux boxes, and in general is worried that someone will notice how much fun he's been having. He was also New and Noteworthy Editor for Software Development magazine, writing the eponymous column, feature articles and product reviews.

He lives in Madison with his wife, kids, and cats. When he's not programming, reading, or writing, he's probably shooting photographs or doing his bit with the Devil's Head Ski Patrol .

Photography

Rick did not follow his photojournalism degree into media work, preferring science, writing, and (for the past couple decades) software development. He is, however, a fairly avid amateur photographer, and does the occasional paid gig. You can see his work on his photo hosting site, or order prints (should you be so inclined) from Red Wolf Photography, his store on Etsy.com.
